Calculation Methodology

  1. 1
Select individuals aged 65 or older using the AGEP column with the condition AGEP >= 65.
  2. 2
Derive income groups from the columns RETP and SSP as follows: Retirement Income Only if RETP > 0 and SSP = 0; Social Security Income Only if RETP = 0 and SSP > 0; Both Retirement and Social Security Income if RETP > 0 and SSP > 0; Neither Retirement nor Social Security Income if RETP = 0 and SSP = 0.
  3. 3
Apply the filter on poverty level using the POVPIP column to separate below 200% FPL (POVPIP < 200) and above 200% FPL (POVPIP >= 200) groups.
  4. 4
Use the STATE column to segment data by state for analysis.
  5. 5
Apply the weight column PWGTP to weight individual records appropriately.
  6. 6
Aggregate weighted counts by STATE and income groups to calculate the share of adults aged 65 or older with each type of retirement and/or social security income by federal poverty level.
