Calculation Methodology

  1. 1
    Select individuals aged 18 and older using the AGEP column with a filter condition AGEP >= 18.
  2. 2
    Derive age groups from the AGEP column using bins: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+, corresponding to labels 1 through 6.
  3. 3
    Identify federal poverty levels using the POVPIP column, categorized as <100% FPL, 100-199% FPL, 200-399% FPL, and 400%+ FPL based on specified value ranges.
  4. 4
    Apply the weight column PWGTP to weight individual records for accurate population representation.
  5. 5
    Filter data by each age group label from the derived bins to calculate poverty level shares within each age group.
  6. 6
    Aggregate weighted counts by STATE and poverty level categories to produce the stacked bar chart showing the share of population by federal poverty level and age group.
