Calculation Methodology

  1. 1
Select records from the dataset using the columns AGEP, STATE, RAC1P, HISP, SEX, POVPIP, SCHL, SSP, RETP, FS, TYPEHUGQ, and WAGP.
  2. 2
    Derive age groups from the AGEP column by binning ages into ranges: 18-34, 35-49, 50-64, 65-79, and 80+, corresponding to bins [18, 34.99], [35, 49.99], [50, 64.99], [65, 79.99], and [80, 1000].
  3. 3
Filter the dataset for each income source category using these conditions:
  4. 4
    - Social Security: SSP > 0
  5. 5
    - Retirement Income: RETP > 0
  6. 6
    - Public Benefits: (SSIP > 0 OR PAP > 0 OR (FS == 1 AND TYPEHUGQ == 1))
  7. 7
    - Earnings from Work: WAGP > 0
  8. 8
Apply the weight column PWGTP to each record to account for survey sampling design.
  9. 9
Aggregate weighted counts by AGEP bins and STATE to calculate the distribution of income sources across age groups and states.
  10. 10
Present the results as a stacked bar chart showing the share of each income source category by age group.
