Calculation Methodology

  1. 1
Select records from the ACS dataset using the columns AGEP, STATE, RAC1P, HISP, SEX, POVPIP, LANX, LANP, CIT, MAR, SCHL, DIS, FS, TYPEHUGQ, SSIP, PAP, SSP, RETP, and WAGP.
  2. 2
Derive age groups from the AGEP column by binning ages into ranges: 18-34, 35-49, 50-64, 65-79, and 80+, corresponding to labels Age 18-34, Age 35-49, Age 50-64, Age 65-79, and Age 80+.
  3. 3
Identify income source categories by applying filters on the columns: SSP for Social Security (values > 0), RETP for Retirement Income (values > 0), combined SSIP, PAP, FS, and TYPEHUGQ for Public Benefits (specific conditions met), and WAGP for Earnings from Work (values > 0).
  4. 4
Apply the weight column PWGTP to each record to account for survey sampling design.
  5. 5
Aggregate weighted counts by AGEP age groups and income source categories to calculate the distribution of income sources across age groups.
  6. 6
Present the results as a stacked bar chart showing the share of each income source category within each age group.
