Calculation Methodology

  1. 1
    Select respondents aged 65 or older using the HHLDRAGEP column, where values are binned into 65-80 (≤ 64.99 to 80.99) and 81+ (above 80.99).

    Filter data by housing tenure using the TENURE column, where TENURE=1 indicates Owned with mortgage, TENURE=2 indicates Home Owned Without Mortgage, and TENURE=3 indicates Rented.
  3. 3
    Use the NP column to categorize household size, where NP=1 means one-person household, NP=2 means two persons, and NP=3+ means three or more persons.
  4. 4
    Exclude records with Unspecified household types as indicated in the HOUSEHOLD_TYPE column.
  5. 5
    Apply the weight column PWGTP to calculate weighted shares of householders aged 65 or older below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) or Elder Index by household size and housing tenure.
  6. 6
    Aggregate the weighted results by HOUSEHOLD_TYPE and TENURE to produce the grouped stacked bar chart showing income poverty shares.
