Calculation Methodology

  1. 1
Select the columns AGEP, HINS1, HINS3, HINS4, HINS5, HINS6, HINS7, HICOV, and STATE from the dataset.
  2. 2
    Derive age groups from AGEP using bins: 18-49, 50-64, and 65+, corresponding to the ranges 18 ≤ AGEP < 50, 50 ≤ AGEP < 65, and AGEP ≥ 65.
  3. 3
    Apply filters for each health coverage type based on the following conditions: Medicare (HINS3 = 1), Medicaid (HINS4 = 1), Medicare & Medicaid (HINS3 = 1 and HINS4 = 1), Employer-based (HINS1 = 1), Tricare/Other military (HINS5 = 1), VA (HINS6 = 1), Other coverage (HINS2 = 1 or HINS7 = 1), and Uninsured (HICOV = 2).
  4. 4
Use the weight column PWGTP to weight each respondent's data.
  5. 5
Aggregate weighted counts by age groups derived from AGEP to calculate the share of each health coverage source within each age group.
  6. 6
Present the results as a stacked bar chart showing the distribution of health care coverage sources across the defined age groups.
