Calculation Methodology
- 1Select individuals aged 60 or older using the
AGEPcolumn, applying filters for age groups 60-69, 70-79, and 80+ based on the bins: 60 ≤AGEP< 70, 70 ≤AGEP< 80, andAGEP≥ 80. - 2Identify disability status using the
DDRSandDOUTcolumns, where Self-Care Difficulty is defined byDDRS=1andDOUT=2, and Independent Living Difficulty is defined byDDRS=2andDOUT=1. - 3Combine these conditions to capture individuals reporting either difficulty dressing or bathing or difficulty doing errands alone due to a physical, mental, or emotional condition.
- 4Apply the person weight column
PWGTPto weight each individual's response. - 5Aggregate the weighted counts by
AGEPage groups and bySTATEto calculate the share of the population with reported difficulties within each age group and state. - 6Present the results as a stacked bar chart showing the distribution of disability shares across the age groups 60-69, 70-79, and 80+.
