Calculation Methodology

  1. 1
Select individuals aged 60 or older using the AGEP column, applying filters for age groups 60-69, 70-79, and 80+ based on the bins: 60 ≤ AGEP < 70, 70 ≤ AGEP < 80, and AGEP ≥ 80.
  2. 2
Identify disability status using the DDRS and DOUT columns, where Self-Care Difficulty is defined by DDRS=1 and DOUT=2, and Independent Living Difficulty is defined by DDRS=2 and DOUT=1.
  3. 3
Combine these conditions to capture individuals reporting either difficulty dressing or bathing or difficulty doing errands alone due to a physical, mental, or emotional condition.
  4. 4
Apply the person weight column PWGTP to weight each individual's response.
  5. 5
Aggregate the weighted counts by AGEP age groups and by STATE to calculate the share of the population with reported difficulties within each age group and state.
  6. 6
Present the results as a stacked bar chart showing the distribution of disability shares across the age groups 60-69, 70-79, and 80+.
