Calculation Methodology

    Select the columns AGEP, STATE, and PWGTP from the dataset.
  2. 2
    Derive the age category by binning AGEP into two groups: less than 60 years and 60 years or older, where AGEP < 60 is one group and AGEP >= 60 is the other.
  3. 3
    Filter the dataset to include all individuals regardless of other demographic characteristics.
  4. 4
    Apply the person weight PWGTP to each record to account for survey sampling design.
  5. 5
    Aggregate the weighted counts by STATE to calculate the total population and the population aged 60 or older in each state.
  6. 6
    Calculate the share of the population aged 60 or older by dividing the weighted count of individuals with AGEP >= 60 by the total weighted population in each STATE.
