Calculation Methodology
- 1Select records from the dataset where
HHLDRAGEPis 65 or older andNPequals 1, indicating adults age 65 or older living alone. - 2Identify households without vehicles using the
VEHcolumn, whereVEH=0means no vehicles kept at home. - 3Apply the weight column
WGTPto each record to account for survey sampling design. - 4Aggregate the weighted counts by
STATEto calculate the share of adults age 65 or older living alone without a vehicle in each state. - 5Calculate the percentage by dividing the weighted count of households without vehicles by the total weighted count of households with adults age 65 or older living alone within each state.
- 6Present the results as a state-level map showing the share of this population without vehicle access.
