Calculation Methodology

  1. 1
Select records from the dataset where HHLDRAGEP is 65 or older and NP equals 1, indicating adults age 65 or older living alone.
  2. 2
Identify households without vehicles using the VEH column, where VEH=0 means no vehicles kept at home.
  3. 3
Apply the weight column WGTP to each record to account for survey sampling design.
  4. 4
Aggregate the weighted counts by STATE to calculate the share of adults age 65 or older living alone without a vehicle in each state.
  5. 5
Calculate the percentage by dividing the weighted count of households without vehicles by the total weighted count of households with adults age 65 or older living alone within each state.
  6. 6
Present the results as a state-level map showing the share of this population without vehicle access.
