Calculation Methodology

  1. 1
Filter the dataset to include only records where HHLDRAGEP is 65 or older.
  2. 2
Derive household size categories from NP, where NP=1 means one-person household (living alone), NP=2 means two persons, and NP=3+ means three or more persons. Select only households with NP=1 (living alone).
  3. 3
Derive vehicle access categories from VEH, where VEH=0 means no vehicles and VEH=1+ means one or more vehicles.
  4. 4
Use the weight column WGTP to apply weights to each record for accurate representation.
  5. 5
Aggregate the weighted data by ST (state) to calculate the share of adults age 65 or older living alone without a vehicle kept at home for their use.
  6. 6
Calculate the percentage of weighted households with no vehicles (VEH=0) among all weighted one-person households (NP=1) aged 65 or older within each state.
